Project Description

Cell guides are the vertical steel guide rails fixed inside a container ship's cargo holds that control the precise alignment and stacking of containers during loading and discharge operations. When a cell guide is damaged — whether by impact during loading, structural fatigue, or corrosion — it renders the affected hold bay unusable for container operations until the guide is repaired and restored to alignment tolerances. For a container ship operator, every hour that a hold bay is out of service represents real commercial loss. Sealion's ship repair team was contracted to carry out full cell guide repair and structural restoration on a container vessel berthed at the Port of Aqaba. Working inside the narrow confines of the cargo hold using suspended cradles for access at height, our certified welders and shipwrights assessed the full extent of the damage across the affected cell guide sections, removed deformed and damaged structural members, fabricated replacement steel components to the exact profile and tolerance required, welded and fitted the new sections into position, and carried out post-repair alignment checks to confirm the hold bay was restored to full operational clearance for container operations. Working inside a container ship's cargo hold presents a unique set of challenges — restricted space, height, poor natural lighting, working from suspended platforms, and the need to maintain strict hot-work safety controls throughout. The photo record from this project, showing Sealion's team suspended inside the hold on cradles at significant height, reflects the technical capability and safe working culture our repair teams bring to every confined-space shipboard operation. The vessel was returned to full container loading operations ahead of schedule, with all repaired cell guide sections verified for alignment and structural integrity before sign-off.

Key Achievements

  • Full structural assessment of damaged cell guide sections completed inside confined cargo hold
  • Deformed and corroded steel members removed and new sections fabricated to exact tolerances
  • Certified welding and fitting of replacement cell guide components carried out at height inside hold
  • Post-repair alignment verification confirmed full clearance for container stacking operations
  • Hot-work safety controls maintained throughout all welding operations inside the confined hold space
  • Vessel returned to full container loading operations ahead of the scheduled completion window
